The West Palm Beach Library Foundation will sponsor a screening of the 1966 classic science fiction drama, “Fahrenheit 451” in support of Banned Book Week. The film is based on the 1963 novel by author Ray Bradbury about an oppressive future where a government destroys all literature. The event will feature a brief presentation on banned books followed by a discussion on the film and the topic of censorship.
The film screening is also a prelude to the upcoming exhibition that the Foundation will be presenting November 7, 2012 – January 6, 2013. Banned and Burned: Literary Censorship and the Loss of Freedom, is an emotional and unforgettable series of events that will feature the traveling exhibition, Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The eight-week presentation provides a vivid look at the first steps the Nazis took to suppress freedom of expression, and the strong response from the United States.
